Planning in Epping Forest and Redbridge
Loughton, Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill come under Epping Forest District Council, while Woodford comes under Redbridge, so the rules for your home depend on which side of the border you live.
Epping Forest has 26 conservation areas, including Chigwell Village, York Hill, Staples Road and Baldwins Hill in Loughton, and St John's in Buckhurst Hill. In a conservation area there, rendering or cladding the outside of a house needs planning permission, and the council needs six weeks' notice before work on trees. York Hill, Staples Road and St John's also have Article 4 directions. In St John's, these cover changes such as new front windows and doors, painting the outside of the house, and gates, fences and walls.
Redbridge has 16 conservation areas. Those in Woodford include Woodford Green and Woodford Wells, Woodford Broadway and Woodford Bridge.
Outside these areas, most garden fences can go up to 2 metres without planning permission, or 1 metre next to a road. Inside work, like a new kitchen or bathroom, doesn't usually need planning permission on either side of the border.
What is an Article 4 direction? Read our guide.
Skips and working hours
A skip on an Essex road or pavement needs a licence from Essex County Council, and only licensed skip companies can apply for one. In Woodford, a skip in a parking bay needs a Redbridge skip licence and a bay suspension. If your job needs a skip, Eli talks it through at the site visit.
Noisy building work is allowed from 8am to 6pm on weekdays on both sides of the border. On Saturdays it stops at 1pm in Epping Forest and at 2pm in Redbridge, and there's none on Sundays or bank holidays.

Questions from homeowners in Loughton and Chigwell
Do you work in Loughton and Chigwell?
Yes. We cover IG10, IG7, IG9, IG8 and E18: Loughton, Chigwell, Buckhurst Hill, Woodford Green, Woodford Bridge and South Woodford.
Where are you based?
In Romford (RM7), a short drive from Chigwell and Loughton.
Can I render my house in Loughton?
Often, yes. In an Epping Forest conservation area, though, rendering the outside of a house needs planning permission first, so check with the council if you live in one.
Do you put up fences in Woodford and Loughton?
We do, along with gates and fence repairs. Most garden fences up to 2 metres, or 1 metre next to a road, don't need planning permission, but some conservation areas have extra rules.
Can you work while we're living in the house?
We can. We often work on homes while the owners live in them, and Eli agrees the order of rooms with you.
How much will my job cost?
It depends on the size of the job, the condition of what's there now and the materials you choose. Eli gives you a written, fixed-price quote after the free site visit.
Is the site visit free?
It is, and there's no charge for the quote either.
Is your work guaranteed?
Our workmanship is guaranteed for 12 months, and the guarantee is written into your quote.
